Blessings and Food

What’s The First Thing YOU Would do?

The first post in this series about Creation is In the Beginning.

Blessings from God and food: they go together, don’t they? After all, they go together at meal time, right? I heard at mealtime blessing years ago:

Over the lips and through the gums,
Lookout stomach, here it comes!

OK, that probably wasn’t as serious as the blessing God gives Noah’s family after the flood: “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth.” (Genesis 9:1)

Where have we heard that before? Oh, yeah, it’s the same blessing God gave Adam and Eve when He created them. So, that means it’s also a command, known as the Dominion Mandate.

But, it’s followed by something new: “The fear of you and the terror of you will be on every beast of the earth and on every bird of the sky.” (Genesis 9:2) Why would God change the Dominion Mandate?

He tells us : “with everything that creeps on the ground, and all the fish of the sea, into your hand they are given. Every moving thing that is alive shall be food for you; I give all to you, as I gave the green plant.” (Genesis 9:2-3) The animals are food now.

Now, we don’t know for sure, but it seems likely that some people ate animals before the flood. After all, we’re quite sinful. And, we know that some animals ate other animals, because fossils have been found where stomach contents showed such things. Noah was righteous, so he probably was vegetarian like God permitted in Genesis one. But other people? It seems unlikely that they all stayed vegetarian.
