This is a continuation of the discussion of Genesis 5 started here.
The Years Dad Lived
Then, the number of years the father lived is given. It is given two ways, I suppose for completeness or to make sure we don’t try to mess with the numbers.
First, it tells how many years the dad lived after the son was born. Then, it tells us the total number of years the father lived.
Again, there are minor “rounding” issues with this. It could be off by a year in either direction. However, this doesn’t get added to the number of years before the son was born. Thus, Adam could have died after 929-931 years.
The writers of Genesis would wonder why we’re quibbling about this. I can see Moses now, “Those picky Americans. Oh, well.”
When I provide the summaries below, I’m going to ignore that extra or missing year.
Then, the father dies, and the genealogy continues with the same information about this named son.
There are a few exceptions to this general pattern. I’ve already mentioned the addition for Adam that Seth was born in Adam’s image. He was still born in the image of God, but not in the same way Adam was.
Enoch’s information is given in Genesis 5:21-24. But, Enoch’s story doesn’t end with his death. Instead, he lived 365 years, and then God took him out of this live to live with God in heaven. Enoch’s life and non-death are mentioned in Luke 3:37, Hebrews 11:5, and Jude 1:14.
(The Jude passage quotes the Book of Enoch. Even though the book with his name is not part of scripture, the passage quoted in Jude is declared true. Whether the rest of the book is is another question.)
Another exception is the prophecy in the naming of Lamech’s son Noah. “This one will give us rest from our work and from the toil of our hands arising from the ground which the Lord has cursed.” (Genesis 5:29) The words used for “will give us rest” sounds a bit like Noah.
Finally, only Noah’s age at the birth of his first son (which we know from other passages to be Japheth) is given. The year of his death is not give, nor are the birth years of his other two sons.
