Closer = Further Away

Back when I first started seriously walking with Jesus (about 40 years ago), one of my spiritual leaders said something that has stuck with me.

Paraphrased, he said that “as we grow more mature in Christ, we will learn that we are even further away from Him than we thought when we were less mature.”

This has stuck with me through all these years. And, the more I think about it, the more I realize just how true it was.

From the outside, I’m probably seen as an OK Christian. But, I’m human, and we humans have one thing in common: we’re NOT OK! We are, in fact, rotten to the core. As I’ve aged, I’ve come to see, as my friend said, that I’ve learned how far away from Christ I really am.

To this day, I can’t fathom why an Almighty God would bother saving someone so wretched as me. Or anybody else, for that matter.

But, maybe there’s more to the story. You see, our purpose has always been to bring glory to God. We have no higher calling. Nothing outranks that.

In God’s eternal plan, He knew how far away we would be: infinitely far away. But, He also decided that that wouldn’t be far enough to escape His love.

As rotten as I am inside, there’s no way I can out-rotten God’s grace.

Do you think it’s too late to turn to Christ? The answer is clear: it’s NEVER too late. For no matter how rotten we are, God loves us more. Our sin nature, bad as it is, is never evil enough to overcome God’s love.
