Grumbling and Disputing
The first post in this devotional series covering the book of Philippians is Devoted to Philippians.
Previously we found that we shouldn’t be causing trouble (in the Church) behind the scenes. Now we find out Paul’s reason: “So that you will prove yourselves to be blameless and innocent, children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you appear as lights in the world ….” (Philippians 2:15)
The verse goes on, but we’ll cover that later. For now, this is given as the reason we shouldn’t be troublemakers. But, it’s so that the world (a crooked and perverse generation) won’t have cause to denigrate the Church. So, how does background murmuring about Church cause the world to think less of the Church?
The world is looking for excuses to allow them to avoid Christ in their own lives. When churches split, or have strong disagreements that become public, they are provided ample opportunity to deny Jesus His due.
We are lights in the world; the world should never be allowed to use our actions as an excuse for staying away from Christ.
Let your light shine brightly, not cast shadows!
