The first post in this devotional series covering the book of Philippians is Devoted to Philippians.
So that your proud confidence in me may abound in Christ Jesus through my coming to you again. (Philippians 1:26)
Previously, I mentioned that Paul was torn between staying alive and dying to be with Christ. It wasn’t really his choice, but he wanted the Philippians to know that it WAS a choice.
In the end, he hoped that he would remain alive. Why? So that the Philippians’ faith would grow stronger!
Did he? We don’t know for certain, but tradition says that he was beheaded after his trial. In the end, it was, as it always was, God’s decision to make.
But, as long as he lived, Paul always thought about his churches first. That was his whole reason for being alive in the first place. And, he wanted the Philippians to know that either option was OK with him.
Would that we could be so matter-of-fact about whether we live or die. Heaven will be a glorious and joy-filled place, and we should not fear death because of this. But, we should also be willing to remain here, to continue our ministry to those around us.
