Timothy’s Proven Worth

The first post in this devotional series covering the book of Philippians is Devoted to Philippians.

For they all seek after their own interests, not those of Christ Jesus. (Philippians 2:21)

The verse I skipped in the previous post is something of a downer, especially compared to the verses before and after it. It seems uncharacteristic of Paul, but there it is. What does it mean?

Paul had a whole bunch of people working with him on his missionary journeys. But, most of his missionary partners over the years left for one reason or another. This verse says that they left because they were selfish. We know that some of them had a purpose: Mark and Luke to write the gospels that bear their names. Titus to lead the church in Crete. But the rest? We don’t know.

But, this verse is in the middle of verses praising Timothy’s commitment. It’s intended as a contrast. There’s a warning in the words, though: when we make commitments, we need to see them through.

Like Timothy did.
