The first post in this devotional series covering the book of Philippians is Devoted to Philippians.
Brethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: … (Philippians 3:13)
I cut this verse in half because I want to focus on one thing: Paul does not regard himself as having eternal life yet. Yet in Romans 8:38-39 he says, “For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” So, clearly he is expecting to be with Christ in His eternal home!
This is another example of that conundrum I spoke to before: we can KNOW we have eternal life, but we shouldn’t LIVE as if we can rest on our laurels. We live our lives as closely as possible to Christlikeness. We will fail, since we are flawed humans. But, He will always love and forgive us.
So, know in your heart that you have life (if you belong to Christ). But, live as if you are still earning your place. I’ll go into more detail on that subject in the next post.
