The first post in this devotional series covering the book of Philippians is Those Boring Openings.
“Therefore I hope to send him immediately, as soon as I see how things go with me; and I trust in the Lord that I myself also will be coming shortly.” (Philippians 2:23)
“As soon as I see how things go with me.” is Paul-speak for “if my trial ends in acquittal.” We need to remember back to chapter one: Paul is in prison on trial for his life. He really doesn’t know if he will be able to visit them; he said so himself in chapter one.
But, Paul is ever the optimist. He HOPES to see them again. It’s like putting on a happy face for the crowd, but with Paul it’s real. He really is an optimist. Nothing phases him.
This is because he knows the One who is in charge, and trusts Him implicitly. THAT is the real message of this verse: trust God above all things, and it will go well, whether it does or not.
