The first post in this devotional series covering the book of Philippians is Devoted to Philippians.
More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ, and may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith. (Philippians 3:8-9)
Previously I pointed out that Paul considered all of his worldly accomplishments (which were many!) to be garbage. Today we see the REASON for that: In comparison to knowing Christ the Lord, nothing else matters.
The “righteousness” he had attained was all according to man’s rules. But, God looks at lists of rules as a way to know that we have messed up. We can’t measure up to God’s standard, because His standard is His own holiness and perfection. Our feeble efforts to do good amount to nothing, because we are still broken sinners.
But, the righteousness he has now is obtained through the work of Jesus, not through Paul’s own machinations. And, Jesus’s work IS perfect!
In comparison with that, yup, all other things fade into nothingness.
