The first post in this devotional series covering the book of Philippians is Devoted to Philippians.
Not that I seek the gift itself, but I seek for the profit which increases to your account. (Philippians 4:17)
As an American, I’ve keenly noticed how some preachers are more interested in the American dream (wealth) vs. Christ’s dream: heavenly riches. But, Paul isn’t seeking his own profit here. He is glad for the gift because it profits the Philippians where it counts: in Heaven.
Christ knows our motives. “Some, to be sure, are preaching Christ even from envy and strife.” (Philippians 1:15) Greed can be a big motivator, but it is of no value in Heaven’s economy.
Our gifts should be with pure motives, looking for gain only after this life has concluded. And, if in ministry, with Paul we should look to the profit only to the giver, not to ourselves.
