Grace to You

Those “Boring” Closings

The first post in this devotional series covering the book of Philippians is Devoted to Philippians.

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. (Philippians 4:23)

All good things must come to an end, an so it is with Paul’s letter to the Philippians.

Paul closes with what is his usual closing words: some form of “grace to you”. It’s a blessing and a statement of hope all wrapped in one. And this one he asks God to give grace to their spirit.

Ever been anxious? That’s the target here. When we are anxious, it is our spirits that are anxious. Our bodies frequently react to anxiety in ways that are physical, but the heart is our heart.

Since Paul used this same kind of sign-off in all his letters, we can safely assume that if he wrote US a letter, it would contain something like this as well.

So, take it as a promise: Jesus’s grace be with your spirit!
